How You Can Make Money On The Road

Updated: Jul 28, 2018

It's a question that we get asked a lot, and the answer is pretty simple. But because this is a blog and we want to give you something to sink your teeth into, we're going to span it out a bit and add some mystical secrets along the way.

Making money whilst living the vanlife is all about finding something that you're good at and using it to your advantage. That's really all there is to it (but keep reading to the end to humour us). Everyone has some sort of creative trait, even if it's hidden deep inside and they don't know it yet. Seb is a guitarist, and has played in touring bands for a large part of his life. He loves music, but his real passion from a young age has been writing. He's just written his first E-Book (which is available from our shop!) and is almost ready to release his first full length fantasy novel!

There are so many travel sites out there that are looking for writers, but if you aren't into writing about your adventures then find something that you are passionate about and start a blog about it. Contact people that are influential in your chosen fields, offer to do some free articles to get your foot in the door and then see where it leads. Companies and radio stations are always looking for jingles too, so if you've got a laptop and a midi interface in your backpack then you can whip out a few tunes on the road. You could even get the locals to join on on some vocals.

If you're gifted in the drawing department then you can always put your crazy creations onto things that people can wear on their bodies or carry in their hands. I'm talking about Tees and Totes, and that's exactly what Rose does to make money from our rolling home.

All of Roses designs started out as little sketches in her trusty notepad, and they've since grown into fully fledged products that she's sold to happy vanlifers all around the world. It's a great feeling when you get a little ping telling you that another order has come through, and it makes all of the hard work and time spent creating your creations seem worthwhile. All of Rose's products are lovingly screen printed by hand, and they're also available to buy from our store!

(This blog didn't start out as a marketing ploy, it just naturally morphed into one. You should probably take your mind off it by looking at our store. Ok, back to the blog.)

Of course, there's always photography and video making too - two skills that are always high in demand from companies that want to link their brands to attractive scenescapes. Despite what people say, it's not all about the equipment that you have either, it's about having a nice eye and knowing what makes an interesting shot. Use your imagination and let your eyes do the hard work. Start a YouTube channel about the things that you love, film your van life cooking skills or document the crazy stuff you get up to on your travels. Humans love to people watch, i think it's hard wired into our DNA.

These are a few of the ways that we make money to help fuel our adventures, but there are a lot of different methods out there that you could look into. We follow a few full time digital nomads that work as computer coders, making code for websites on the go. This is a job that you can easily do whilst off grid in your mobile home; as long as you have access to a lap top and the internet then you're good to go. It's a lucrative business, so have a search for a course if you want to get a slice of the pie.

To summarise - find something that you like/enjoy and fit it into your new way of life. It doesn't matter whether you want to write, snap, draw or record, just look for someone who wants your skills and make them realise that they can't live without your super powers. The key is going out and looking for the work; people won't come to you (not until you're super famous at least) so seek out people that fit your interests and start bringing home the bacon (not literally, we're talking about money).
